What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic peptide built from tuftsin — a tiny natural protein fragment your immune system already makes. Russian scientists at the Institute of Molecular Genetics engineered Selank to be more stable than tuftsin while keeping its calming, brain-supporting properties. It sits in the cognitive peptide category because preclinical research suggests it may influence both anxiety and memory at the same time — a combination that makes it unusual compared with most standard anti-anxiety compounds.[2] It is classed as a research compound and is not approved for human use.
How Selank Works
Think of the brain as a busy office. GABA is the office manager who tells everyone to calm down and stop shouting. Benzodiazepines (like diazepam) work by supercharging that manager. Selank appears to work nearby — research in rat brain tissue found that a single dose changed the expression of 45 genes tied to GABAergic (calming) neurotransmission within just one hour, and 22 genes were still changed three hours later.[6] In other words, Selank seems to fine-tune the brain's own calming system rather than hammering it with a blunt force. On top of that, separate research shows Selank can influence BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that helps neurons grow and stay healthy — which may explain some of its memory-related effects.[5] Researchers also describe Selank as enhancing BDNF and HGF/c-Met pathways that are important for neuroplasticity.[2]
What the Research Shows
Anxiety and stress
In rat models of chronic mild stress, Selank showed anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects.[6] When rats were placed under repeated "social stress" — daily confrontations with other males for 20 days — stress triggered a spike in pro-inflammatory signalling molecules called cytokines (specifically IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and TGF-β1). Selank treatment brought those cytokine levels back close to normal.[4] This matters because runaway cytokine production is one way chronic stress can quietly damage the body over time.
Memory and cognitive protection
Rats that consumed alcohol heavily for 30 weeks developed clear memory and attention problems. When Selank was given during alcohol withdrawal, those memory deficits were largely prevented. Researchers also saw that Selank stopped the abnormal spike in BDNF that ethanol had caused in the hippocampus and frontal cortex — two brain regions critical for memory.[5] The study also noted a mild cognitive-stimulating effect even in older rats not exposed to alcohol at all.[5]
GABAergic gene expression
A dedicated gene-expression study dosed rats with 300 mcg/kg of Selank and then looked at 84 genes in the frontal cortex. Changes in expression closely paralleled those seen after GABA itself was administered, strongly suggesting Selank's calming effects involve allosteric modulation — essentially a gentle nudge — of the GABAergic system.[6]
Morphine withdrawal
In rats made dependent on morphine, a single dose of Selank cut the overall withdrawal score by nearly 40% and increased tactile sensitivity threshold nine-fold — results that came close to (though were slightly below) what diazepam achieved in the same model.[1] This suggests Selank can ease the physical and behavioural signs of opioid withdrawal in animals.
Liver protection under stress
Chronic physical stress causes measurable damage to liver cells in rats — swelling, cell death, and inflammation. When Selank was administered before each stress session, all tested doses reduced those degenerative changes. The 300 mcg/kg dose fully restored the normal balance between cell nucleus and cytoplasm size.[3]

Mixing and Storing Selank
Selank typically arrives as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder in a sealed vial. To reconstitute it, researchers inject a measured volume of bacteriostatic water (water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol to prevent bacterial growth) slowly into the vial, aiming the stream at the glass wall rather than directly onto the powder. Swirl gently — never shake — until the powder fully dissolves. Once mixed, the solution is usually stored in a refrigerator (2–8 °C) and used within a few weeks. Unmixed powder can be kept frozen for longer-term storage. Always use sterile technique and check that the solution is clear before use. Discard if you see particles or cloudiness.
