What is Cortagen?

How Cortagen Works

Think of Cortagen like a short text message sent to brain and nerve cells. The message essentially says: "Grow, repair, protect." Because it was built from brain-cortex chemistry, it appears to be recognized preferentially by brain and nerve tissue. In lab culture experiments, Cortagen stimulated the growth of rat brain-cortex tissue explants, while having much weaker effects on other tissue types tested at the same time.[5] This tissue-specific behavior is a hallmark of peptide bioregulators — each short peptide tends to "speak" most loudly to the tissue it was derived from.

At the molecular level, a microarray study looked at how Cortagen changes which genes are switched on or off. Researchers gave mice a five-day course of Cortagen injections, then scanned the activity of over 15,000 gene transcripts in heart tissue. They found 110 known genes with meaningfully altered expression — some turned up, some turned down — suggesting Cortagen influences a broad but specific network of biological pathways.[4] What those exact pathways do in nerve tissue is still an active area of investigation.

Nerve Regeneration

Some of the most striking preclinical findings involve peripheral nerve repair. In one study, rats whose sciatic nerve had been surgically cut and sutured were given intramuscular Cortagen (10 µg/kg) for ten days afterward. The nerve fibers in the Cortagen group grew faster and conducted electrical signals 40% more efficiently than controls.[2] A follow-up paper explored the delayed effects of this treatment — looking at whether benefits persisted long after dosing stopped — and found evidence of lasting functional recovery.[1]

Brain Ischemia (Reduced Blood Flow)

Chronic brain ischemia means the brain isn't getting enough blood — and oxygen — over a long period. In a rodent model of this condition, both Cortagen and the related polypeptide Cortexin helped ischemic rats recover normal behavior more quickly.
